Bathroom Remodeling Do's and Don'ts

Bathroom Remodeling Do's and Don'ts

Pick fixtures that last, not just for style or for what fancy shmansy gizmo the thing has on it.

Faucets, commodes, sinks, and tubs are all fixtures. When you are choosing your fixtures, you'll want to be sure they are from a reputable manufacturer. You'll also want to check the internet for feedback from customers who purchased or use that particular brand of fixture.

While there are plenty of really cool fixtures for your new bathroom, you'll want something that lasts through every day use and stands the test of time for you and your family. Don't just go with beauty, go with function and durability.

It's okay to look for second hand fixtures, but be sure they fit your plumbing system such as sinks with holes that hold fixtures to match the setup you already have or plan to get.

Picking fixtures that last is a no-brainer, however, many people may not really know what lasts and what brands generally fall apart quickest. While you may like a certain kitchen sink faucet that you think looks good, it may not really fit the plumbing setup under your sink.

An experienced plumber will be able to help you pick out the right faucet for the right sink that fits the right countertop and still be able to give you choices within certain parameters.

A good plumber will know what brands are manufactured with cheaper parts that wear too quickly, and should recommend the best fixtures to fit within your budget that are still quality made and have proven to outlast the rest.

The next step in your planning is to write it all down.

Write down your goals, why you are remodeling your bathroom, things you have researched, and keep notes along the way. Be willing to jot down things that come to your attention and things you will need to ask your remodeling contractor about.

Be sure to plan properly so that your bathroom remodeling project goes as smoothly as possible!

There will always be set-backs when you do a remodeling or home improvement project. They may be small or they may completely put the project on hold. Either way, they will occur.

It's important to plan a little time in your project for set-backs or unforeseen problems. So for instance, if you plan your project to be completed over the weekend, realize it may take the following weekend as well.

Have you asked yourself why you are doing your bathroom remodeling? If you do, you can be sure to incorporate aspects into the plan that you may not otherwise think of.

For instance, if your bathroom update is something that you hope will provide you with enough space, then it's best to focus the functionality of the space into your plan.

You'll want to be sure you have enough storage and room to move around. Or if you are planning the new bathroom just to get a new Jacuzzi tub, you'll want to make sure that part of the budget is well padded.

The final thing you need to make sure to do is to hire an experienced contractor. One of the only ways you can find out a company's reputation in the area is to ask around. You may have friends and neighbors who can give you a good referral.

But remember too, once contractor may have done a great job on your neighbor's bathroom but failed to please ten other customers with their services. Just be sure you're willing to call all the referrals the contractor gives you and not just one.

You should also check out the internet comments from feedback on the contractor's website. If you can't find the contractor on the web, there could be good reason why not. Either way, be sure to check references before you try some unknown contractor.

All in all, this is pretty basic advice for planning out your new bathroom remodeling project. If you follow the advice, you'll have an easier time handling what could otherwise be a more stressful endeavor. Remember too, your plumbing or remodeling contractor should help you through your planning process and be able to advise you on all situations when you remodel your bathroom.
