Let me tell you of a social network this is blowing up right now and continues to grow every day. And when a website catches on like this, trends arise quickly. And one of these trends is home improvement.Pinterest is place where you can “pin” images you find on the web and set them in categories that are called “boards” that you set up. Many people are sharing ideas for new bathroom remodels, or kitchen renovations, or images of what they want their bedroom to look like in the future. This is a great opportunity for home construction contractors to jump in and join the conversation.

Here are some advice in getting into using Pinterest for your company.

Spend A Little More Time With This One

Pinterest is new to most, take a little time to look around and see how other people are using it. And use the search feature to see what people are posting, or “pinning” as it’s called. Take some time to create boards and keep them organized. Users have the ability to follow either everything you pin, or just certain boards that you create and pin to. And if you’re confused by these terms I’m saying like “pin” and “repin” and “boards”, if you spend some time with Pinterest, you’ll understand what I mean.

Don’t Keep It All Business

To entertain the followers, it’s OK to throw in some personality along with displaying your photos of your latest remodeling project. Pin things that you enjoy, favorite music, places to visit, or some food recipes(there’s alot of that on Pinterest) that you’ll want to look up later. But, something you can do to cross business with personal, is to post images taken around the office or jobsite of you or your employees. That gives the follower a sense that there is a person behind your company and they will feel more connected with you.

Socialize, It Is A Social Network After All

Find interesting people to follow, repin their posts, comment on their posts, get your company name out there. There are many people talking about services that you offer right now. People are creating boards of what they want their future kitchen to look like….give them some tips on how to get there and what they should start with. The search feature will help out with finding people, and you can connect your personal facebook profile, or twitter account to see if your friends have already signed up.

Boost SEO Efforts To Your Site

A great feature of the site, is when you pin something that is on your website, to one of your pinterest boards, it creates a link to your website that other pinterest users can click and go straight to your company site. And what’s even better is when someone really enjoys what you have pinned, that they’ll “repin” it to their followers. That creates another link to your site to other people that you haven’t met yet. This is one big reason to meet new people and socialize like I mentioned above.

But you will need an invite to get in….

Pinterest is currently invite-only, but have no worries, just send me an email at dano@footbridgemedia.com and I will send you an invitation so you can be on your way to promoting your website on 2012’s fastest growing social site.

There has been a lot of talk lately on forums and social media about Google’s Panda update and the ongoing changes to their algorithm. Many of our clients have contacted us about how their rankings have jumped or dropped almost on a daily basis.

While many of the discussions do have some validity, there is a lot of confusion on how certain sites are being affected. The main problem is that historically Google’s algorithm changes would occur at most every quarter, but the recent Panda has been almost changing on a weekly basis for the past six months or so. Why is this?

Google has implemented the human element into their own algorithm. A “human quality rater” that reviews and eyeballs hundreds of sites and actually gives them a rating based on criteria supplied by Google. Once this data is compiled, it is fed to the computer-side algorithm and now the computer will repeat the same rating as the human element.

The reason for the constant updates and changes to the rankings is because the human element of the rating system is constantly updating and changing the algorithm for the computer to rank million of sites. So how does this affect you?

As a Footbridge Media client, I would have to say, “Not that much.” What Google is trying to do is humanize the algorithm. This should be a good thing, considering Google is always trying to display the best results that someone is searching for.

Footbridge Media has always stayed true with our implementation process for the past eight years and will continue to do so. Displaying the correct, unique content for our websites, followed by a unique back linking program and 7 stage submission process, when the Google Panda stops dancing, I am confident that our clients will continue to rank high within the search results.

Yet if you are concerned about your own ranking, always feel free to contact us today.

Over the past few weeks I have seen conversations about the “Dangers of Duplicated Content”. In order to fear duplicated content, one must understand what it actually means. In the most recent 2011 Google General Rating Guide, they mention that:

“The website www.answers.com contains content copied from Wikipedia.org and other dictionary and encyclopedia sites, but is not considered to be a low quality site because the content is well-organized and intended to be helpful for users. Similarly, there are pages on medical information sites that contain copied content. If the page is well-organized and appears to be designed to be helpful for users and not just to display ads for users to click on, it should be rated based on how helpful the content would be for users.”

So in regards to the information above if the content is relevant to a user, then even through the content may be duplicated, is o.k. in the eyes of the algorithm. But to provide the best search experience, search engines will rarely show multiple, duplicate pieces of content and thus, are forced to choose which version is most likely to be the original (or best). They will do this through the other aspects of the algorithm, and not just the actual content of the site.

So is duplicated content going to kill your site’s ranking? No. Just the page with the duplicated content may not appear within the search results.

Will someone stealing your content hurt your site’s ranking? No. It will not effect your site in a negative way, but it does frustrate contractor’s that content is stolen, and thus that is a copyright issue. Not a search engine optimization issue.

According to Google’s Webmaster Tools: Duplicate content on a site is not grounds for action on that site unless it appears that the intent of the duplicate content is to be deceptive and manipulate search engine results.

If you are concerned about duplicate content on your site, or stolen content, my suggestion is to use Copyscape. It is a good tool to use.

Whatever you are selling, if it is lawn care services or new home construction, your website better have as much content has possible. This is because the Internet is the information superhighway and most people use it for information of some sort.

The information on a website is its content. Generally the more useful and interesting content a website has the more successful it will be. This is because more people will want to visit it again and again, this is especially true if a website is constantly adding more and more content on a regular basis be it articles, latest projects, consumer information and opinion or whatever.

It’s true there are hundreds of thousands contractor websites on the web but only the odd surfer goes online to specifically look for a company so if you gear your site to simply sell your product
and services and do nothing else you won’t be very successful.

This is because nobody will even visit your site unless they’re looking specifically for your product and they just so happen to find it via a search engine.

Now you know content is king but do you know what good content is? Well the first trick to creating good content for your website is to be sure that your content will have specific appeal to your target audience.

Next you want original content, if someone asked me what I considered good content I’d say that it was content that’s different and unique and not the same as the content on the other
website I just came from.

Good content will show the writers own personality and flavor in it. It will be interesting and very informative, if it’s not what’s the point of putting it online in the first place, nobody will benefit from it and it won’t help you get more repeat visitors.

Your content should be easy to understand and use regular English as far as possible, if you’ve to use topic specific words that could cause trouble for some visitors make sure you explain them. To create content you simply write news and articles about the services you offer, albeit kitchen remodeling or about the latest water heater design. This ensures that visitors who read your content are also the visitors that are likely to be interested in buying your product.

This is what makes Footbridge Media’s complete marketing program one of the best in the industry. Each month, we add monthly articles, press releases and consumer information directly to your website, which not only increases the content on your site, but also by adding more pages, more information, will increase the likelihood that someone will find your site.
