One of the best ways to homeowners understand what you do is to tell stories about the clients and the home improvement projects you've handled in the past. All of your marketing documents and messages should be peppered with client stories as well as photos of projects completed.

If you want homeowners to talk about you and your company and remember you and send referrals to you, there's one more story you need to tell: your story.

People Are Fascinated by Home Improvement Contractors

Yes, this is true. Why do you think there are so many shows and websites dedicated to home improvement? You have a skillset that most homeowners can only dream of. You are capable of doing things that many, many people are unable to.

Of course we know that the real world of home improvement is not anything like that depicted on TV. You are unable to complete an entire bathroom remodeling project in three days for under $5K.

Your clients and potential customers and social media followers believe you lead an interesting life. They would love to know what you are doing on a daily basis and how an actual home improvement contractor lives, works and beautifies homes.

Tell them your story. What drives you? What gets you out of bed in the morning? Why do you do what you do?

Share your passion for your work and insights into who you are. What fascinated you when you were growing up? Who influenced you? What experiences made you the contractor you are today? Share your feelings and beliefs, desires and dreams, and even your fears. Let people see that you are a real person, just like them. Every day you go to work, there are problems. There is drama. Share this with them. Warn them about the problems, create the ideal customer experience during a home improvement project and this will help them.

Find the dramatic story of your life and tell it. It's what makes you unique and memorable. It's what will help you stand out in the crowd.
